We write to invite you to participate in a discussion of Robin DiAngelo's essay "White Fragility" in the Center for Mission on Monday, April 24 from 11:45-1:15. This discussion, in solidarity with dialogue initiated by the St. Kate's One Read for Racial Justice, aims to make space for candid conversation about and reflection on whiteness at St. Kate's. Our tripartite mission compels us to engage in the important work needed to eliminate bias and racism.
We strongly encourage attendance by our white colleagues.
It is time for us to do this work.
Robin DiAngelo begins her essay on "White Fragility" by defining it in this way: "White people in North America live in a social environment that protects and insulates them from race-based stress. This insulated environment of racial protection builds white expectations for racial comfort while at the same time lowering the ability to tolerate racial stress, leading to what I refer to as White Fragility."
Participants are expected to read the article (attached in invitation email) and come prepared with a passage or two to discuss with the group. A light lunch will be provided.
